• selea is a brothel proprietor in the city of suzette, one of the five main port cities in the pyrate republic, a remote cluster of islands in the sky above the continent
• it's unknown to most people except herself where exactly she comes from, but for years she was a feared pyrate captain of the airship, the wayward son (or just the son)
• earned herself the nickname, the pyrate mother which in turn gave her brothel the name, mother house
• then, a handful of years ago, she lost her eye in a battle and could no longer navigate safely, so she retired from pyracy and took over a local brothel in suzette from a contact
• for a year, she was the employer and occasional lover of the harlot and later fellow brothel proprietor, fani, whom she fell madly in love with
• but fani didn't agree with her way of running a business and moved to the neighbouring port city, laila, where she started her own brothel, sister house, the two competing constantly for esteem and clients
• devout follower of the wind goddess, calli, ascribing all her success to her and often praying to her for guidance and help; calli is the only being selea would ever submit to
• was born to a poor farmer family on an island across the sky as a second generation settler and grew up always looking to the heavens, hearing about the fearsome pyrates and wanting to be shown the respect it requires for anyone to fear you
• with her methods and her personality, fani shows her that being feared is not the same as being respected and respect is something else, hard-earned and more precious than treasure
• because selea runs her brothel like a pyrate ship, fani is successful in leading a rise among her old employer's harlots against her, her entire work force eventually leaving her to join sister house instead
• so in the end, selea must crawl before fani and ask to work for her rather than the other way around, the other woman allowing her to take on a position as assistant proprietor rather than the "captain of the ship"
